Feathered Leaves

Dear Heavenly Father,

You delight me in the early morning as I stare at barren trees.

The dead leaves barely hanging onto

wintry, sleeping branches

suddenly come alive

at the noise of the garbage trucks arriving.

Not dead leaves at all,

but resting birds,

warming themselves in your rising sun,

watching the mountain turn

from black to purple to pink,

defined in its own shadows.

The birds shoot away like arrows from the noise

that has disrupted their sweet repose.

In the silence that follows

the leavetaking of the lumbering trucks,

one by one the feathered leaves return

to take their places,

filling the tree again

in the amber dawn.

Thank you, Heavenly Father, for allowing me to rejoice in this new day you have made.

  1. Such beauty – lovely Susan ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. Thank you. From you, that is a cherished comment!

      1. A pleasure dear friend.

  2. This is just so lovely, Susan and reminds me to take solace and joy in the simplest of pleasures, like the birds who feel safe huddling in the trees at night. Just seeing them every morning and protecting their safe harbor is one of my greatest responsibilities — I go out and sweep just at the time that they wake up, to keep predators away and to greet them myself. I truly love this poem. You have a gift.

    1. Thank you so much, Beth. I don’t share my poetry often as I don’t consider myself a poet. Your encouragement really means a lot. Maybe I will do more in the future – spread my wings a little toward the sun. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. My favorite style of poetry…free verse. I love the imagery and the gratitude infused in every line….and the reminder of rebirth…”in the amber dawn.” xo dale

    1. I reread my reply and saw where I left out an entire thought/sentence….that is what deleting does..LOL….meant to say, “the return of leaves/birds…as in renewed life” …there is always that deeper meaning.

    2. Thank you, Dale. Just felt filled by God’s grace and beauty this morning.

  4. So lovely, your ‘feathered leaves’ ๐Ÿ™‚ x
